Brownhall wins Speakers Art Prize
Madam Speaker’s statements Friday, 6 June 2014
As a fitting celebration of Queensland Day, I am pleased to remind members of the event at 1 pm today in the red chamber, at which I will be formally receiving a commissioned painting of our Parliament House from Queensland artist Mr Robert Brownhall. Robert was selected as the winning artist for the Speaker’s Art Prize, which was a state-wide search for a Queensland artist to be awarded a commission for a painting, drawing or sketch of Queensland Parliament House.
The Speaker’s Art Prize provided an opportunity to promote and nurture the arts in Queensland and for the parliament to own a unique work which will be available for official purposes and for ongoing display at Parliament House. This competition was facilitated by Flying Arts Alliance, an arts and cultural development organisation providing services to regional and remote Queensland.
Finally, the parliament will own its own painting of this magnificent building, and I am very happy to inform members that Robert has superbly captured the craftsmanship and beauty of this magnificent heritage building. This artwork will be a lasting benefit to the parliament and people of Queensland. I encourage visitors to the parliament to view the painting and appreciate this magnificent artistic depiction of one of Queensland’s premier heritage buildings.
